211 Fl.NINC. SOIMKKKI.^ Life-sizr. COPYRIGHT 1900, DY V. MUMFORD, CHICA THE EVENING GROSBEAK. In the far Northwest we findthis beautiful bird the yeararound. During the winter heoften comes farther south incompany with his cousin, theRose-breasted Grosbeak. What a beautiful sight itmust be to see a flock of thesebirds—Evening Grosbeaks andRose-breasted in their prettyplumage. Grosbeaks belong to a familycalled Finches. The Sparrows,Buntings, and Crossbills belongto the same family. It is thelargest family among birds. You will notice that they allhave stout bills. Their food ismostly grains and their bills arewell formed to crush the seeds. Look at your back numbers of^^ Birds and notice the picturesof the other Finches I havenamed. Dont you think DameNature is very generous withher colors sometimes ? Only a few days ago whilestrolling through the woods withmy field glass, I saw a prettysight. On one tree I saw a Red-headed Woodpecker, a Flicker,an Indigo Bunting, and a Rose-breaste
