Description:

Summary[edit] Description: Spotted this red-naped sapsucker at the Visitors Center. This male was doing what it is famous for, drilling sap wells in a cottonwood. They drill a series of holes, wait for the sap to fill up the holes, and then return to drink the sap that has oozed out. They will also snack on any insects caught in the sap. We see a few here each spring, before continuing on with their migration to mixed coniferous woodlands to the north and west. Photo: Tom Koerner/USFWS. Date: 19 May 2016, 08:31.
