dusky rufous; breast, under parts ofthe body, and ridge of the wings, cinereous lead-colour; throat andneck before white; lower part of the neck, breast, and belly, lead-colour; sides of the body and thighs black, edged with white; undertail coverts barred rufous and black ; legs bright reddish violet;shins behind smooth. Inhabits Brazil; called by the Guaranis Tataupa, which meansYnambu of the Chimney; as it often approaches habitations. Itmakes the nest on the ground, of dry herbs, near the trunks of trees;and lays four deep blue eggs. The flesh is not esteemed: it has astrong voice, more so than any other of the kind. lO.-OARIANA TINAMOU. Tinamus strigulosus, Tinamou Oariana, Temm. Pig. Sf Gall. 8vo. iii. p. 594. Bill brown, the base and under mandiblewhite ; plumage above the body rufous, the feathers edged near thetip with black ; on the wing coverts some spots of yellow, with blackstriffi; forehead black, surrounding the top of the head as a crown ; IL.cxxvn.
