Description:

Summary[edit] Description: The Spotted-wing Drosophila or Cherry Vinegar Fly (Drosphila suzukii) is an important agricultural pest that was first reported in the UK in Kent a couple of years ago. It attacks both ripe and unripe fruit, or more specifically the female damages the fruit by penetrating the skin using the large ovipositor with the serrated edge shown in the enlarged inset of this photo. This species has not yet been added to the NBN Gateway, although dipterists have reported a number of sightings in southern England. This specimen was found near rotting Honey Fungus (Armillaria) at the base of a Silver Birch tree (Betula pendula) in Christchurch Park Ipswich, East Suffolk (TM166453) on 24 Sept 2014. The ID has been confirmed by Peter Beuk, see www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thre... Date: 27 September 2014, 23:09. Source: Spotted-wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) female.
