Clodius Parnassian - Parnassius clodius, Sierra Buttes View, Sierra County, California
Description:
Summary[edit] Description: English: Clodius Parnassian - Parnassius clodius, Sierra Buttes View, Sierra County, California. Male Clodius Parnassians don't want females with whom they have mated to mate with anyone else, so they manufacture this pouch (pink and white in the picture above), and affix it to the female's abdomen. This prevents other male Clodius Parnassians from mating with the female. There is still room for the female's eggs to be laid. This is the insect version of a chastity belt.
