Sandalus niger Knoch

Image of Sandalus

Description:

Summary[edit] Description: English: Male (left) and female (right) specimens of Sandalus niger Knoch, a beetle that is an ectoparasitoid of cicada nymphs. This pair were collected in USA: Ohio: Allen County: Cairo, on Salix (willow), 19-Sep-1987, collector unknown (purchased specimens), in collection of M.K. Oliver. In addition to the size difference between the sexes, the antennae are sexually dimorphic, those of the male having the distal segments modified -- possibly for chemodetection of the female's pheromone which males are suspected of using to locate females for mating. Date: 24 April 2011. Source: Self-photographed. Author: Michael K. Oliver, Ph.D.. Image stack combined and processed using CombineZM software.
