E20151217-0004—Torreya californica—RPBG (23467155899)
Description:
Torreya californica—California nutmeg. A century ago when people still darned socks it would not have been necessary to explain that darning eggs were also known as "nutmegs", a legacy of a long line of Yankee pedlars who traveled throughout the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. The name still persists as the nickname of Connecticut as the "Nutmeg State." Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
