Description:

Description: Introduced, cool-season, annual to short-lived perennial, tufted, leafy grass 35-110 cm tall. Leaves are rolled in the bud, hairless and glossy underneath. Flowerheads are slender erect spikes 10-23 cm long. A native of Europe, it is sown as a short-term late autumn to spring stock feed and is a weed of winter cropping and roadsides. There are many varieties and hybrids which are known variously as annual, Italian and short-term ryegrass. Can produce large quantities of high-quality forage, but requires good moisture and fertile soils for vigorous growth and good persistence. Establishes quickly after autumn rains. Responds strongly to nitrogen fertilisers. Rotationally graze for optimum production and persistence. Allow tillers to develop 3 fully emerged leaves before grazing down to 5 cm.
