Summary[edit] Description: In addition to the open panicle bearing spikelets with silver-purple variegated glumes, the long ligules (usually well over a few mm) are also diagnostic of tufted hairgrass. Deschampsia cespitosa is common in these subalpine meadows along with Carex nigricans, Juncus drummondii, Vahlodea (Deschampsia) atropurpurea, and Poa fendleriana (P. cusickii).
