What is the gum called India Rubber ? A remarkable union of atoms of carbon and hydrogen alone,by which a unique compound is obtained. This compound isthe most elastic of substances and at the same time among themost impervious to air and water. But it was for centuries sosticky and unstable, that it could not be used for clothing, etc.The life of Charles Goodyear, an American, was devoted to theexperiments which resulted in the every-day use of India Rub-ber and Gutta Percha by the people. What is Gutta Percha ? Gutta is the Malay word for gum, and percha is the tree thegum comes from. But there are many trees that yield the milkygum that we make into India Rubber, and we use the wordGutta Percha to mean India Rubber that has been vulcanizeduntil it is perfectly hard, and capable of carrying a high finish.408
