Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus) (9428398740)

Description:

Summary[edit] Description: My partner's garden has mostly grass in it this year (last year it had lots of thistles and ragworts, we removed them in the autumn because we didn't want hundreds of them, but we miss them now!) and in July it became clear that the grass was a really good thing for certain caterpillars when we were overwhelmed by these Gatekeepers (Pyronia tithonus). I noticed this one wasn't moving at all, and realised its wings hadn't dried out yet. In fact they weren't perfectly straight, so perhaps it's one of those slightly deformed ones occasionally seen. This enabled me to get very close. It flew off within about 30 minutes. 21 July 2013, Sandridge, Hertfordshire. To see my collections, go here: www.flickr.com/photos/anemoneprojectors/collections/.
