Description:

Summary[edit] Description: English: Pachnoda sinuata is a large species of "fruit beetle" in Southern Africa. Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae. This shows the isolated wings of a dead specimen. The beetles fly at great speed with elytra nearly shut and take off very smartly at need, snapping the posterior wings out like flick knives, barely lifting the elytra, as shown here. On settling they stow the wings almost as abruptly. One specimen with elytra removed. Two isolated wings, one partly folded. Date: 15 February 2012, 18:06:27. Source: Own work. Author: JonRichfield. The speed with which the species (and some other Cetoniinae) can deploy or stow their wings argues that they use a more sophisticated mechanism than species that open their elytra.
