Description:
Acer grandidentatum—bigtooth maple. Not a California native but one of the original plantings in 1940. The only trees older are a few native to the site. One can surmise that James Roof, the first director of the garden who spent the late 1930s involved in reforestation work for the U. S. Forest Service, obtained this maple from Forest Service stock. Bigtooth maple is closely related to the sugar maple of Eastern North America. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
