Description:
Cyprinodon pupfish & green algae (Acetabularia and Batophora) in Moon Rock Pond, northeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas. Only six species of fish have been reported from inland lakes and ponds on San Salvador Island, including three species of pupfish - genus Cyprinodon (see Turner et al., 2008 and Martin & Wainwright, 2013). The fish shown above, including the iridescent blue-headed individual (= a mature male), are Cyprinodon - either C. brontotheroides or C. variegatus. At the bottom of the above photo, the pale green-colored cups supported by whitish stalks are Acetabularia crenulata (white mermaid's wine glass algae). The fuzzy, dark green-colored algae are Batophora oerstedi (fuzzy finger algae). Classification of pupfish: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Actinopterygii, Cyprinodontiformes, Cyprinodontidae Classification of wine glass algae: Plantae, Chlorophyta, Dasycladales, Polyphysaceae Classification of fuzzy finger algae: Plantae, Chlorophyta, Dasycladales, Dasycladaceae References cited (arranged chronologically): Turner, B.J., D.D.
