Description:

Description: Cyclura rileyi rileyi (Stejneger, 1903) - female San Salvador rock iguana. This lizard is one of the rarest reptiles on Earth. The species is sexually dimorphic: females have smaller body size and small dorsal crests (see above), while males are larger and have more prominent dorsal crests (see elsewhere in this album). Population estimates indicate that only several hundred individuals exist on Earth today. San Salvador rock iguanas are principally herbivores. The rocks are eolian aragonitic calcarenite limestones of Pleistocene age (probably the Owl's Hole Formation, Middle Pleistocene). Classification: Animalia, Vertebrata, Reptilia, Squamata, Iguanidae Locality: Green Cay, western Graham’s Harbour, offshore from northwestern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas. Date: 19 June 2010, 14:14. Source: Cyclura rileyi rileyi (San Salvador rock iguana) (Green Cay, offshore from northwestern San Salvador Island, Bahamas) 1. Author: James St. John.
