THE TARPON OF TURNERS RIVER 363 royal palms that adorned it, and thetragic legends connected with its aban-doned plantation, rotting house, andovergrown graves. Big herons rose sluggishly fromflooded banks before us and with hoarsecries flew up the river, dangling theirpreposterous legs. Fly - up - the - creeksflitted silently away, while lunatic snakebirds, made crazy by worms in theirbrains, watched us from branches thatoverhung the stream, and when we werealmost beneath them dropped into thewater as awkwardly as if they had beenshot. We admired beautiful trees, greatvines, fragrant flowers, and blossomingorchids as the tarpon bait was trolledfrom the trailing canoe, and from themouth of the river to the cut-off no tar-pon disturbed our meditations. Hurry-ing sharks showed huge fins above thesurface, slowly rolling porpoises turnedkeen eyes upon us as they passed, otterslifted their little round heads, and agreat manatee, frightened by a suddenglimpse of our outfit, left a long wake
