A certain inequality inthe character of the two cilia of the zoospores of some of the membersof the group has earned for it the title Heterokontae, from the GreekKopTos, a punting-pole. In consonance with this name, its authorspropose to re-name the Conjugatae; Akontaeand Oedogoniaceae witha chaplet of cilia become Stephanokontae, and the algae remainingover in the three series from which the Heterokontae and Stephano-kontae are withdrawn become Isokontae. Conjugatae, Protococcalesand Characeae are exclusively freshwater; Confervales and Siphon-ales are both freshwater and marine, but the latter group attainsits greatest development in the sea. Some Chlorophyceae are terres-trial in habit, usually growing on a damp substratum, however.Trentepohlia grows on rocks and can suridve considerable desicca-tion. Phycopeltis grows on the surface of leaves, Phyllobium andPhyllosiphon in their tissues. Gomontia is a shell-boring alga, ALGAE
