La pupille horizontale, et la fente dite « larmière » ou « larmier » sont caractéristiques des cerfs. Dans les larmières coule la « larme de cerf », décrite comme Eau qui coule des yeux du cerf dans ses larmières , où elle s'épaissit en forme d'onguent qui est de couleur jaunâtre (source : Larmière ou larmier, dans le Dictionnaire de la langue françoise, ancienne et moderne).
