Description:

Description: Phyllanthus acidus - Malay gooseberry, Otaheite gooseberry. Despite its name, the plant does not resemble the gooseberry, except for the acidity and colour of its fruits. It is deciduous tree believed to be native to Madagascar, but has spread to many tropical (and a few subtropical) places in the world, where it is appreciated for its small numerous and edible fruits. The flowers can be male, female or hermaphrodite. They are tiny and pinkish. The fruits (drupes) are pale yellow or white, waxy, crisp and juicy, and very sour. It has only one seed in each fruit. The juice can be used in beverage, or the fruit pickled in sugar. When cooked with plenty of sugar, the fruit turns ruby red and produces a kind of jelly. Date: 10 October 2008, 07:47.
