Image of Bison bison bison
Description:
"This population of Bison on Antelope Island are descended of Bison brought here from the southern plains in the 1890's. Currently they number around 500. Unfortunately for many years this island was a private cattle ranch, and the Bison interbreed with cattle, and so they cannot be considered ""pure"" Bison as they do have some Cattle genes. Most USA populations of bison are no longer pure and have Cattle genes, a problem likely to get worse as unregulated ranching of Bison on private ranches is now becoming common."
