Description:

A dead ringer (except for wing position) for the Yellow-collared Scape Moth (Cisseps fulvicollis) and Virginia Ctenucha, which are in a completely different family (tiger moths, subfamily Arctiinae). Perhaps all mimicking beetles in family Pyrochroidae, which contain cantharidin? The brightly colored tiger moths are toxic in their own right, so presumably Mullerian mimicry between the beetles & the tiger moth species. Don't know if this one is also toxic or if it is a harmless 'freeloader' (Batesian mimic)in the mimicry complex. Typical wingspan 18-28 mm; seen here on ivy.
