Image of Florida fighting conch

Description:

During a big minus tide, this long sandbar was exposed, with over a hundred adult Strombus alatus on it. When the tide recedes this much they actually dig their way up out of the sand and prop themselves up as if they are enjoying the fresh air! It seems risky to me, considering there are gulls and presumably raccoons and so on that might view them as a tasty meal. There were no juveniles at all that I could see, unless they remained hidden in the sand.
