Image of Sipyloidea sipylus (Westwood 1859)

Description:

“the Phasmatodea ... are absent from the Hawaiian Islands ... .” That’s from the definitive 1961 monograph on walkingsticks in Oceania (hbs.bishopmuseum.org/fiji/pdf/nakata1961.pdf) Anyway, these are introduced recently enough that there’s very little info out there on what they might be. However, this one seems to match the image from Maui at www.whatsthatbug.com/2008/10/24/walkingstick-in-hawaii/ IDed by phasmid breeder Bruno Kneubühler as Sipyloidea sipylus. Comments/confirmation welcome. There are also reports from Kauai at bugguide.net/node/view/238028/bgimage and from Hawaii at www.instanthawaii.com/cgi-bin/hi?Animals.wstick. It was found indoors on the wall of our B&B’s bathroom. Body length 7.6 cm. Flew briefly.
