Image of Northern River Otter

Description:

Observed two river otters playing on a log in the American River on the north side river bank across from the Howe Avenue boat launch area. One of the otters stayed on the log basking in the 88 degree sunlight. The weather was clear with a slight breeze. This log is normally used by a dozen Red-eared Pond Sliders for sunning. Most of the turtles took to the water because of the horse play by the otters. A couple of the turtles stayed. The otters then moved on to the river bank where they continued their horse play. After several minutes they returned to their den, which is located sixty yards upstream in the north bank of the river. This section of the river is protected by a steep slope that is covered with thick brush and vegetation on one side and an island on the other. The water here is 2-3 feet deep and has a muddy bottom.
