"Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni) Note: With many thanks for making the ID of this observation to Greg W. Lasley whose knowledge of birds is remarkable and whose generosity in sharing such knowledge is unsurpassed. 18 May 2016 US Highway 277/281 & US 70 Headed east, past Randlett, Cotton County, Oklahoma According to Greg Lasley, the Swainson's Hawks in these images are about 10 months old, they're juvenile or immature birds. There are two birds represented here with Bird 1 being the subject for Images 1-2 & 5-6, while Bird 2 is represented in Images 3-4. Swainson's Hawk is a migratory bird according to All About Birds. Swainson's Hawk winters in South America, primarily in Argentina, and it flies through the continent's middle and northern areas to and fro as well as Central America and Mexico to get to its spring and summer grounds which includes most of North America from northern Mexico to the entire western half of the United States including southwestern Oklahoma, where we made our observations. Its breeding range extends north into most of Canada's western provinces and on into Alaska's eastern and northern areas. Because of its extensive transcontinental flight, Swainson's Hawk is an authentic resident of the Western Hemisphere.
