Image of Phanogomphus militaris (Hagen ex Selys 1858)

Description:

This is the male Sulphur-tipped Clubtail (Gomphus militaris). At LLELA in mid-June the Elm Fork's rising flood waters immediately downstream from the Lake Lewsiville dam's spillway had already managed to block the Bittern Marsh Trail. And at the now newly defined end (and start) of the trail stood a rather large Gomphid perched solidly over a boulder. Evidently the dragonfly was taking in the early afternoon's sun and because it was still mostly overhead our subject was photographed in the obelisk position.
