New Mexico checker mallow (basal leaves)

Image of plants

Description:

The basal leaves of Sidalcea neomexicana are quite different from the cauline leaves which are more deeply lobed, with narrow leaflets. If varieties are recognized, ours would fall into subsp./var. neomexicana. The basal leaves may be absent when the plant flowers.Rare in this area and uncommon in northern Utah. Utah distribution mainly follows the Utah Plateaus and the Wasatch Mountains. April 6, 2013, Salt Lake valley, Salt Lake County, Utah, 4,300 ft. elev.
