Description:

Field Trip - Canvey Island (Wick) - 02/08/11Back to Essex and under probably the best conditions we've had this year, a trip was organised with 6 of us arranging to meet at the Morrison's Car Park at 9pm. It had been the hottest day of the year and te evening was very mild indeed under a cloudy sky. We set up on the concrete flats down near the coast and ran 4 traps, Don Down's 125w MV Tripod set-up, Graham's dual 40w Actinic and my 125w MV Robinson & 160w MBT Trap. The Moths came in at a steady pace to start with around Don's Tripod and then all of a sudden, it was hard to keep up and tick each species as they came in. Not quite as epic as our 126 species of Macro Moths last year, but we had a fair few new ones for the site and some local rarities to spice things up a bit! The actual site is still an absolute tip, as they continue to develop a road that will eventually lead to a distribution site, luckily much further over from this important site. The Moths were superb including new Moths for me Dog's Tooth, Marbled Green, Reed Dagger, Sallow Kitten, Agdistis bennetii, Ebulea crocealis, Epiblema foenella, Eucosma campoliliana, Evergestis limbata and Stathmopoda pedella, so 10 new species was astonishing!Other species of note included 1 Crescent several White-points, 3 Garden Tiger's and the rare RDB3 Platytes alipinella was also very common there with at least 25 individuals, always nice to see! Here is the provisional list that I made on the night, no counts were made by me and i'm probably missing a few as my pen run out of ink!Macro MothsBright-line Brown-eyeBrimstone MothBrown-line Bright-eyeBrown-tailBulrush WainscotCanary-shouldered Thorn [NFY]Cream-bordered Green PeaClayCloaked MinorClouded BorderClouded SilverCommon CarpetCommon FootmanCommon RusticCommon WainscotCopper UnderwingCrescentDark ArchesDog's Tooth [NEW!]Double-striped PugDrinkerDun-barDusky SallowFen WainscotFlame ShoulderGarden Tiger [NFY]Heart & DartKnot GrassLarge Yellow UnderwingLeast CarpetLeast Yellow UnderwingLesser Cream WaveLesser Yellow UnderwingLime-speck PugMagpie MothMarbled BeautyMarbled Green [NEW!]Marbled MinorMullein WaveNut-tree TussockOak EggarPale ProminentPebble Hook-tipPlain PugPoplar Hawk-mothReed Dagger [NEW!]Riband WaveRosy FootmanRosy RusticRuby TigerRusticSallow Kitten [NEW!]Scalloped OakScarce FootmanScorched CarpetShaded PugSharp-angled Peacock [NFY]Shuttle-shaped DartSilky Wainscot [NFY]Silver-YSingle-dotted WaveSlender PugSmall Blood-veinSmall Fan-footed WaveSmall ScallopSmoky WainscotSouthern WainscotStraw DotSwallow ProminentTawny-speckled Pug [NFY]Treble-barTree-lichen BeautyTurnip MothTwin-spotted WainscotUncertainV-pugVine's RusticWhite-line Dart [NFY]White-point [NFY]Willow BeautyYellow ShellYellow-tailMicro MothsAgdistis bennetii [NEW!]Cochylis hybridellaEbulea crocealis [NEW!]Sitochroa palealis [NEW!]Epiblema foenella [NEW!]Eucosma campoliliana [NEW!]Evergestis limbata [NEW!]Evergestis estimalis [NEW!]Platytes alpinellaSchoenobius gigantellaStathmopoda pedella [NEW!]Argyresthia goedartellaYponomeuta sp.Ypsolopha sequellaColeophora sop.Batia unitellaAnacampsis blattariellaSynaphe punctalisHelcystogramma rufescensBlastobasis ligneaLimnaecia phragmitellaPandemis cerasanaEpiphyas postvittanaCelypha strianaApotomis betuletanaAgapeta hamanaEudemis profundanaEpinotia brunnichanaEucosma canaEucosma obumbratanaCydia pomonellaCalamotropha paludellaChrysoteuchia culmellaCrambus perlellaAgriphila tristellaCatoptria pinellaCatoptria falsellaPediasia aridellaScoparia ambigualisEudonia pallidaCataclysta lemnataEvergestis forficalisPyrausta aurataPhlyctaenia coronataUdea prunalisEndotricha flammealisAphomia sociellaTrachycera advenellaOncocera semirubella
