Nasturtium officinale (s. str.) (4811' N 1603' E)
Description:
2011-04-16 Lower Austria, district Wien-Umgebung (wet meadow; 410 msm Quadrant 7862/1).German name: Echt-BrunnenkresseManfred A. Fischer told, on excursion, the story of how N. officinale previously was even cultivated in Austria (for salads), but oftentimes the plants traded under the name of 'Brunnenkresse' actually were oftentimes Cardamine amara which actually is quite common in Austria, while Nasturtium officinale is rare. When I was a kid we also gathered what we thought was 'Brunnenkresse', but considering how rare N. officinale is hereabouts, and how it might not even be native to the region where I grew up, it is not at all unlikely that what we ate was C. amara (or even yet another one).
