Native to Colombia; elsewhere cultivated as ornamental. The shiny dark green leaves are up to 10 inches (15 cm) long by 7 inches (17.5 cm) wide. Leaves are shiny on top and coppery underneath on purplish petioles that are as long as the leaves themselves.
