On a small road, where I had seen two other live box turtles (plus two road killed). This is a total of six box turtles in 2013, three alive and three dead. Captured, photographed and released. One of the photos shows that a predator attempted to open this turtle near its head and maybe gnawed on the rear end as well, but the turtle lived on! I saw no box turtles in 2014.

Baby found killed on road. These pictures are hard to look at. I had trouble making an identification and received help from wildlife biologist who was working for the State of Connecticut.

"It had been almost exactly two years to the day since I had seen an Eastern Box Turtle in this very same spot. On the road, under some transmission lines. This turtle was in exceptionally good condition. Very attractively patterned carapace. Hardly a ding on it, and fully mature, based on scutes growth ridges. A female, I think, by flat plastron and brown eye. About 5""-6"" carapace. Captured, photographed and released, off the road, in the direction it was headed. A lucky day for a turtle watcher!"
