Agave americana var. mediopicta 'Alba'White-Striped Century Plant. Agave americana is a native of Mexico and Arizona and Texas in the United States. Now planted as an ornamental world-wide. Frequently escapes from cultivation and naturalizes. The leaves of this Agave can have several color variations, each known by a different variety name. 'Variegata', for example, has light edges and a green middle stripe while 'mediopicta' has a light stripe and green edges. The version, such as the one photographed, with a whitish-center stripe goes by the cultivar name of 'Alba'. Most of these varieties are not recognized by the current Flora of North America. Photographed in a private garden in Berkeley, CA

Agave americana var. variegatavariegated century plant. Agave americana is a native of Mexico and Arizona and Texas in the United States. Now planted as an ornamental world-wide. 'Variegata', for example, has light edges and a green middle stripe while 'mediopicta' has a light stripe and green edges. Most of these varieties are not recognized by the current Flora of North America. I have passed this particular agave many times over the last quarter century as my vehicles and I climbed the Berkeley Hills on the way to the Regional Parks Botanic Garden. I finally stopped the car last week to photograph this plant. References give the size of Agave americana as less than 2 meters. I can attest that it is taller since I am 1.8 meters. My guess is that this specimen is about 2.5 meters tall. Photographed in a private garden in Berkeley, CA.
