Captured last night on my balcony - a beautiful and larger than average female black widow. I suspect L. hesperus, though I can't confirm.

There are many located by my uncles home.

This Black Widow Spider, Latrodectus hesperus, was observed in a home in Corpus Christi, Texas. The leg span was about 30-40 mm in diameter. I'm not sure if this is the Western Black Widow or a related species. It does have the typical red hourglass marking on the underside. Any suggestions of an ID are welcome!

This individual lives in our ladder; usually stored in deep shade hanging against a fence. For the last week I've had it out to paint part of our garage. The spider--which is keeping what seem to be two egg-cases-- is satisfied to stay... She does move about to be as much out of the sun as possible.

I saw a lot of widows out along the road, building webs in the road barriers and fences. Still not sure what species we have around here. I also saw some very colorful males, but didn't get any decent photos.
