Native to the Malesia region. White bark, fissured and papery-flaky in elongated shaggy pieces, used for caulking. Young leaves silky. Common in coastal swamp. Medicinal oil from leaves and bark. Oil extracted useful as massage oil; cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens. It is also used as a screen or windbreak and tolerates dry conditions. Synonym(s):

Melaleuca linariifoliaflax-leaved paperbark. Two long blocks along Masonic Avenue in Albany, California are planted with these trees. They are striking in late spring when in bloom. This photo shows that the bark is nearly as striking as the flowers. Melaleuca linariifolia is native to New South Wales and Queensland in Australia.
