Description: The 'test', or shell, of a purple sea urchin (
Tripneustes gratilla), taken off the coast of Hawaii. The patterns in the test easily show off urchin's five-fold symmetry. The raised, rounded tubercles are where the spines attach; and through the tiny holes extend either tube feet or gill structures. Date: 27 December 2012, 13:42. Source:

Description: We saw one lone sea urchin. I missed this conversation, but believe that that there has been a dearth of sea urchins recently in the area. We did see plenty of sea stars (that fellow to the right), so they seem to be doing okay. Date: 31 July 2011, 09:30. Source:
