Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis) , Skipper Butterfly Never before recorded for Sonoma County in the Lepidopteristsâ Society, it's soon to be added to their Season Summary for 2015 as a County Record. It's a Duskywing skipper butterfly, which flew into our garden, like a dive bomber, landed on the purple Wallflower, long enough for me to take a few photos, then zoomed out as fast as he could. Funereal Duskywing (Erynnis funeralis) is a butterfly of the Hesperididae family. It is found from Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas south to Argentina & Chile. Obviously, this one was lost!
I don't know if there is any more information in this photo, than this one: http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1309396 from a year ago, @euproserpinus. Today, as then, the butterfly flew off and disappeared as I bent down to get a shot of the underwings.
interesting that the Mourning Cloak and Funeral Duskywing have a similar look with the dark body and the white fringe. Guess they reminded older generations of the dress of mourners at funerals.
