Lots of these guys today. Only fish my friend and I caught today. We almost caught some bass but they got off our hooks right before getting on dry land.

I checked out the swamp in the middle of the field because it was dry. Well I came upon a post in corner of the swamp and found a pool full of these guys. Very interesting.

Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) 24 August 2014: Walked about Cooper Creek and Avondale Park in Denton, Texas during the hottest part of the summer when the rains haven't fallen for a few weeks and are about to later in September. But by then parts of the creek's rock-hard bottom have dried out and some fish including many of the smaller fish like this Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) have chosen the wrong waterhole to swim in and end up dry-docked and dying due to lack of oxygen and exposure and dehydration. Also imporant in this image was the circle of approaching fresh water snails that are visible in this image. The fish had been dead a few hours at most and the snails were making their way to the tiny corpse of the Western Mosquitofish to scavenge what nutrients they could. This was clearly evident and in the making when we took this image. Does anyone know what these even tinier (than the W. Mosquitofish) freshwater snails are called, their ID? Please make any corrections to our suggested IDentification of this fish and help us find out what the freshwater snails are called. Thanks in advance for your generous assistance.

Headed down to the Master Naturalist State conference a day early to make a few iNatting spots along the way. :) I'm an addict, of course! I stopped at this nature park in Lampasas too -- it really is quite nice!

Sorry for the bad picture. But this was the best one I could get. They all kept swimming away.
