Paeonia mascula reaches its southern range in the Upper Galilee in northern Israel. Locally it is very rare, endangered and protected. At the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens we have a backup population for educational reasons and in case there are problems with the very few wild populations.

Tragopogon buphthalmoides is a common tuberous perennial herb in Mt Hermon. During May one can find taller plants blooming in relatively lower altitudes: 1000-1700m. In June-July shorter stemmed plants are blooming in the higher areas, like this one.

Abutilon hirtum is an E African species penetrating northwards alogn the Rift Valley. In the Dead Sea area it is found in springs, date groves and other irrigated places.

This is one of the largest, rarest and most beautiful flowers in Israel, growing only in the higher areas of the Galilee. I love zooming into the flower.

Every spring we enjoy the wonderful paeonia flowers. But forget to see the fruits, which are as interesting. The pink seeds are sterile ones, for advertising, the dark seeds are the good ones, collected and dispersed by birds.

Cercis siliquastrum (Judah's tree) is a common Mediterranean tree. In Israel it occurs mainly on the north. But widely used in cultivation.
