This desert tree originates in the African savannas. The species penetrates northwards along the rift valley and created a savanna-like landscape in the Arava Valley between Jordan and Israel. It is an important factor of the whole ecosystem, many animals live in it or eat it, others rest in its shade.

In the Great Caucasus one can find many alpine plants, some of which are widspread also in the Europena Alps, Trifolium alpestre is one of them. It has a typical flowering head that has a younger head attached to it.

Chardinia orientalis is an annual that grows in the semi-arid parts of the Middle East towards central Asia. The flwoers are dull violet and very shy. the starry fruits are very prominent.

It blooms in July after most other plants are drying. It is a cushion-like spiny plant, typical for the sub-alpine (Tragacanth) belt. Here you can see it after blooming when the corollas are gone and the papery calyses are still visible.

This tiny poppy is a rare one in Israel, occurring sporadically in high altitudes. This one bloomed near a rock that provided a good shady contrast.
