This gigantic (~3 cm) black rove beetle crossed the trail in front of me. Impressive defense response included expanding glands at the end of an up curled abdomen and emitting stinky fluid. Two days, two rove beetles---i call that a good week.

Devil's coach-horse beetle (Ocypus olens). Observed inside a house in Groningen. In one of the pictures you can see white things sticking out of its abdomen, those are the stink glands.

Was taking a pic, but the chickens got interested and tried to nab it.
