"Taxon: Emys orbicularis 2010-05-28 Vienna, district XXII. - Donaustadt, Lobau (155 msm Quadrant 7865/1) German name: Europäische Sumpfschildkröte ID source: Wikipedia Habitat: Danube alluvial forests. Here a female one on its way to (or its way back from!) an egg-laying place - one can tell for sure as the next bayou is lying a good 500 metres distant from the place where I found this one. They may cross much longer distances to the warm and sandy places where they lay their eggs and in Lobau they may even cross streets and become trapped in gardens but this one here was safely in the wilderness. Occurrence: Long ago quite common and considered a ""fasting food"" in the Middle ages (all animals living even partially in water were considered as ""fish"" of a kind, and thus allowed during fasting season), and even cultivated for this reason. Nowadays in Austria there are most likely only two regions with truly native occurrence of this species - this one here, that is Danube river alluvial forests, are one of them, the second one are March river alluvial forests."

The word chelonian is popular among veterinarians, scientists, and conservationists working with these animals as a catch-all name for any member of the superorder Chelonia, which includes all turtles living and extinct, as well as their immediate ancestors. The meaning of the word turtle differs from region to region. In North America, all chelonians are commonly called turtles, including terrapins and tortoises. In Great Britain, the word turtle is used for sea-dwelling species, but not for tortoises. European pond turtle is a long-living freshwater species. This turtle moves on land not as fast as in the water, but more agile than land-dwelling, non-swimming chelonian. This is a cautious animal: in danger it is lurking in the water quickly and buries itself in the mud near the shore. In the autumn, in October, European pond turtles hibernate, waiting for the winter at the bottom of reservoirs. ÐÑи ÑеÑепаÑ
