This is a rare moss that requires copper and/or other metals in the substrate and is thus one of the so-called 'copper mosses'. The bluish-green color and small size are distinctive.

This moss formed mats on the trunk of an oak tree near Mariah Meadows Resort (in hills Near Cobb) and is here seen photographed later from a collected piece. The small green specks seen on the upper leaf surfaces are gemmae that enable vegetative propagation.

The Ephemerum plants are the small ones with narrow leaves and brown capsules. Some Bryum plants are also visible as the larger greener moss. This was photographed at home as a piece of moss turf gathered intact from the CYO Camp on Feb. 19th 2016

This spectacular west-coast endemic moss is common on tree trunks in mesic areas in California's North Coast Ranges and elsewhere. The capsules are formed in spring on the underside of the shoots.
