ADVENTURES ON THE LAWN 83 of one of his eyes, and then he seemed to wake up, forhe jerked his head suddenly to one side. I was quiterelieved, and went to the kitchen and got the cook togive me a little sliver of raw meat off an uncookedleg of mutton, and stuck it on the end of a thin stickwith a sharp point and took it to him. Cautiously Iapproached him and slowly brought the meat close tohis nose. He sniffed it, and then at once took it inhis mouth and chumped it up, and seemed to enjoy itimmensely. It really was quite an adventure. Once the gardener came running to me, much excited, and said— Theres a tortoise-shell on the lawn. Ithought he meant a strange tortoise-shell cat, but wentto see what it was, and, behold, there was a big tortoise !How it got there I cannot think, for there are onlythree houses within a near walk, and none of theirowners had had tortoises. It has always remained anunexplained mystery. But I like mysteries, and hopeyou do too.
