Ben centosessanta anni fa arrivarono nel mondo occidentale, una lunga parentesi durante la quale non hanno mai vissuto momenti di vera gloria, come invece meriterebbe questo bellissimo fiore, oggi si va gradualmente rivalutando con mostre internazionali e nazionali che si svolgono in autunno (a Courson e anche nel castello di Masino). Gli orticoltori non hanno esitato ad avviare campagne d’incroci a tutto campo, così che il settore si sta allargando a dismisura: partendo dalle 10-15 specie naturali si è oggi arrivati a non meno di 60-70, Questa pianta non appartiene alla famiglia delle orchidee ma è una erbacea perenne della famiglia (Liliaceae), si pianta da un rizoma raggiunge dimensioni massime di 80-90 cm di altezza con steli eretti o talvolta arcuati, foglie di colore verde chiaro o medio, a volte maculato, alterne ovate o lanceolate, i fiori hanno una forma insolita, con sfondo bianco o giallo e macchie rosa, viola o porpora non profumano ma hanno una fioritura molto prolungata da settembre a novembre.
