The aloe forest north of Nieuwoutville is one of the spactacular botanical views I ever saw. Look at the trees at the far background, Some of the tree aloes are huge, some are very young.

One of the smaller Aloes, and a striking one. It is not surprising that this species was one of the first to be cultivated in Europe. We found it in the Calvinia area, every 5-10 km we saw another plant, very scattered.

The Aloe veras is a beautiful ornamental as well as a medicinal plant. Interestingly it was around Europe since Roman times, but nobody knows from wehre they brought it. There are similar species in eastern Africa, but the exact species.
