Summary[edit] Description: San Rafael cactus (Pediocactus despainii) is endemic to central Utah where it occurs in Wayne and Emery counties. It is associated with open pinion-juniper communities and desert shrub communities around 6000ft. San Rafael cactus was listed endangered in 1987 due to threats from collection for horticultural purposes, OHV related impacts, and mineral exploration. Credit: Daniela Roth, USFWS.
