Veronica fruticans Jacq.Rock Speedwell, DE: Felsen-EhrenpreisSlo.: skalni jetinikDat.: July 1. 2015Lat.: 46.44212 Long.: 13.64298Code: Bot_897/2015_IMG8804 Habitat: stony alpine grassland, road side, skeletal ground; southwest oriented mountain slope; open, sunny and dry place; calcareous ground, exposed to direct rain, elevation 2.000 m (6.500 feet), average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 0 - 2 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil among stones and rocks.Place: Mt. Mangart region, Mangart's flats, road side of Mt. Mangart Alpine tool road, at the beginning of the end road loop, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC.Comment: Veronica fruticans is one of the most beautiful species of very numerous genus Veronica. There are well above thirty species and subspecies known growing in Slovenia. They are not always easy to be determined correctly. Six of them climb up to alpine elevations. None of them has so intensive colored, deep blue flowers as Veronica fruticans. They are also quite large for the genus. Hence it is easy to spot it and to be properly recognized. Veronica fruticans grows exclusively in subalpine and alpine elevations. Individual flowers open for only a single day, but the flowers are clustered and they open one after another, therefore the plant can be spotted a considerably long time in July and August.Ref.:(1) A.Martini et all., Mala Flora Slovenije, Tehnina Zaloba Slovenije (2007) (in Slovene), p 478.

Mono penstemon, Penstemon monoensis, California, Inyo County, White Mountains, elevation 1340 m (4405 ft). This rare species is found only along the lower west slopes of the White and Inyo Mountains bordering Owens Valley in Inyo and southern Mono counties, California. It prefers dry rocky calcareous soils and outcrops at desert elevations of 1200-1800 meters (3900-5900 feet). Its nearest relative is thought to be Penstemon calcareus from the Death Valley region farther south and east.Ironically the only known Mono County occurrences of this species are in the canyon where these images were taken, about a mile north of the county line. If the type specimens hadn't just happened to be collected here in 1906, there's a good chance the species would have been named P. inyoensis instead!
