Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) -- known to Kiwis as the Spur-winged Plover (I learned all these common names from the NZ field guide, and got home to discover that Kiwis have very different ideas from the rest of the world about what to call their birds :-) ). Common & conspicuous in the North.
