"I left the reef early in the interest of keeping my SLR dry, and was chilling in my car when Jeff tapped on my window to show me this: the pseudoconch of the sea butterfly Corolla spectabilis. Sea butterflies are very strange pelagic mollusks that have wing-like mantle flaps. This particular one grows this gelatinous ""pseudoconch"" instead of a shell, and sometimes they wash up on beaches. How awesome is that? Note: about 95% sure this is C. spectabilis. Comment if you can confirm."

Quite a few of these mysterious slipper-shaped clear things on the dog beach - all the same size and shape, entirely clear, flexible but sturdier than you'd think, not like a jellyfish. UPDATE: There are amazing photos on the internet of these opisthobranchs swimming - see http://slugsite.us/bow/nudwk452.htm or Google images.

Quite a number of these were washed ashore on the beach. Maybe 2-3 cm in length, they were gelatinous, but fairly stiff (maintaining their shape when handled). They looked like little crystal jelly bed slippers to me. Given there were quite a few, and one of my field partners thought she had seen them before, I figured they were not unusual. However, so far I've not found them in any book, and no one I have asked has recognized them. I did get a suggestion that maybe they are the 'shell' of a pseudothecosome pteropod. I would welcome any insight to this mystery.

Slipper-like. Outer part covered in tubercles, and clear throughout. Appears to be the same as an earlier observation by Matt Goff.

My husband saw one of these sea butterflies swimming near a dock. Suddenly their shells are all over all the beaches. I've never seen it, but heard it can happen sometimes, this time of year.
