This mussel was in a tidal rockpool with it's open end pointing up. I noticed a sort of sparkling/twinkling as though light was playing on something shiny at its lips. I recorded a close-up high speed video at 240fps and the first image here is a cropped portion showing what is going on. You can see filiments waving up and down inside, and if you watch carefully you can see little particles floating down then being sucked inside. Sorry the animated GIF is rather large, even though very low resolution. To see the complete original see http://list.afraid.org/naturewatch/P1316100.AVI (please download it rather than playing it multiple times from the link)

Trying to id the species in 2637528 here are a couple more photos, difficult to get a side on view as it is growing up from between other things. Here is a video of the output siphon at work (you can see a jet of water is pushing small particles away) Have added it as a new observation with animations of input and output siphons of this feeding mussel at /observations/2723212.

Mussel in rock pool. First photo is of input filters, second of output. You can see particles being sucked in and particles being diverted and pushed away by output stream. Same observation as /observations/2638963
